In 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus. At that time, it was illegal for a black person to have a seat when a white person did not. As a result, she was arrested, and Martin Luther King became her attorney. People in Montgomery, Alabana were so angry about her arrest that they decided to take action. So, they boycotted the buses.
Boycott: to refuse to use something
How did the Montgomery boycott work?
After Rosa Parks's incident, 42,000 black people, residents of Montgomery, stopped taking buses. Instead, they took taxis, gave each other lifts and walked. Because of this the Montgomery Bus Company lost a lot of money.
What were the three goals of the Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA)?
The MIA had three demands. They wanted polite treatment on buses and black drivers for routes in black neighbourhoods. In addition, they were willing to sit in the back of the bus, as long as they did not have to give up their seats to whites.
As a result of the boycott, what changed in December 1956?
In December 1956 segregation on public buses was made illegal everywhere. After that Rosa Parks took another ride on the bus. This time she sat in the front.
